Scioli, Macri head down to the wire

A new opinion poll by Poliarquía, published on 11 October in La Nación, suggested that a second round presidential ballot was likely. Leading the pack ahead of the 25 October first round is the Daniel Scioli, the candidate for Argentina's ruling Frente para la Victoria (FPV, Kirchneristas) on 37.1% of voting intentions. He is followed by Mauricio Macri, of the centre-right opposition Cambiemos coalition, on 26.2%, and Sergio Massa, of the dissident Peronist coalition Una Nueva Alternativa, in third on 20.1%. The head of Poliarquía, Eduardo Fidanza, said that there was an indication that Macri was losing votes to Massa. However, with only two weeks to go before the first round of the general elections, Massa may not have the time to overtake Macri. To win in the first round, a candidate needs to get 45% of the vote, or 40% plus a ten-point advantage over his nearest rival. Poliarquía surveyed 1,838 people nationwide between 2 and 7 October.
