Chile hosts second ‘Our Ocean’ conference

On 5-6 October, Chile hosted the second ‘Our Ocean’ conference at the Sheraton Miramar Hotel in Valparaíso. Over 400 leaders from government, academia and civil society participated including the US Secretary of State John Kerry, and Prince Albert of Monaco. “We don’t want empty speeches. We want voluntary commitments to concretely protect biodiversity”, said Chile’s foreign affairs minister, Heraldo Muñoz. This new conference aims to find solutions to deal with illegal fishing, marine plastic pollution, ocean acidification, and its relation to climate change. In addition, it encourages the creation of marine protected areas as a tool to protect marine ecosystem.
