BRAZIL: Lula admits he was warned about <em>mensalão</em>

President Lula da Silva admitted he was warned that the former leadership of his Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT) was involved in the cash-for-votes scheme, that became known in Brazil as mensalão, before it hit the headlines in 2005. Lula had previously denied he had been warned about the scheme. But, despite his confession, the supreme court rejected requests to have Lula stand as a witness in the case, which could begin next year.
