ARGENTINA | Russia. President Cristina Fernández claimed to have deepened a “strategic association" with Russia last week after two-way trade fell more than 30% last year to US$1.36bn. Fernández signed 10 accords with her Russian peer Dmitry Medvedev, the first Russian head of state to visit Argentina since ties were established 125 years ago. The most eye-catching cooperation agreement was with Russia's state nuclear company, Rosatom, which hopes to be chosen to build Argentina's fifth nuclear reactor, Atucha III, although Argentina is also in talks with Canadian, South Korean and French companies: only two reactors are currently operational; a third, Atucha II, is due to come on-stream in 2011.
