The small government-allied Partido Socialista Brasileiro (PSB) has
announced that it “will not put forward an independent presidential candidate"
in the forthcoming election in October, shattering the aspirations of the
maverick deputy in the lower chamber of congress, Ciro Gomes. Gomes was the main
obstacle to President Lula da Silva keeping the governing coalition behind his
anointed political heir, Dilma Rousseff, and turning the presidential race into
a plebiscite on his own, popular administration. But, as it happens, Gomes's
exit from the race could boost the chances of Rousseff's main opponent, José
Serra, of the opposition Partido da Social Democracia Brasileira
