NICARAGUA: Institutional crisis escalates

Supporters of the ruling Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN) resorted to violence last week to prevent opposition legislators from convening to overturn a contentious decree approved by President Daniel Ortega in January extending the terms of public officials. Ortega's unabashed endorsement of the political violence and disregard for democratic process has hit a nerve with the international community, still jittery after the June 2009 coup in neighbouring Honduras.
