PANAMA: Martinelli restructures interior ministry

This week Panama's congress passed a bill put forward by President Ricardo Martinelli which restructures the interior and justice ministry, in line with the government's priority of reducing crime. While sceptics remain doubtful as to how far the changes will address the problem, attributed to the spread of international drug gangs in Panama and the region as a whole, the security institutions have come under scrutiny in the wake of a scandal involving the chief of police and concerns about his recent appointees.
