Argentina and Uruguay seek to paper over pulp-mill dispute

Argentina's President Cristina Fernández hosted her Uruguayan peer José Mujica in Buenos Aires on 28 April in an effort to put to bed the long-running conflict between the two countries over the construction of a pulp mill on the Uruguayan side of the River Uruguay one week after the International Court of Justice (ICJ) at The Hague delivered an even-handed verdict on the matter. Both heads of state claimed that they were ready to start a new era of bilateral cooperation but one thorny issue remains: the blocking of the international bridge between the Argentine town of Gualeguaychú and Uruguay's Fray Bentos by Argentine protesters. Fernández made no commitment to clear the bridge, and protesters made it clear during a well-attended march on 25 April that they will fight on.
