President Raúl Castro has dismissed a vice-president, Jorge Luis Sierra Cruz, the transport
minister, and Luis Manuel Ávila González, the sugar minister. The council of
state explained that Sierra had been relieved of his duties for “making
mistakes"; Ávila for recognising “deficiencies" in his work. Ávila's deputy
Celso García Ramírez steps into his shoes. Antonio Enrique Lussón Batlle, who
had been in charge of the railway system, replaces Sierra as vice-president.
César Ignacio Arocha, head of a food distribution company, becomes transport
minister.
