JAMAICA: Golding declares state of emergency
The entrenched links between politics and organised crime in Jamaica were laid bare this week after Kingston erupted in violence in response to Prime Minister Bruce Golding's reluctant decision to comply with a US extradition request for the alleged drug baron, Christopher 'Dudus' Coke, after nine months of stalling. The violence, which prompted Golding to declare a month-long partial state of emergency in the capital, has so far resulted in at least 60 dead, while the controversy surrounding Coke's extradition has left the reputation of the Golding administration in tatters.
