President José Mujica led celebrations of the “Día del Nunca más"
(Never Again day) on 19 June - the anniversary of the birth of Uruguay's
liberator, José Gervasio Artigas - in the Plaza Independencia in Montevideo.
Mujica's predecessor Tabaré Vázquez launched the idea three years ago to “salve
the open wounds left by the dictatorship" but neither the opposition nor the
armed forces agreed to take part. This time around, Mujica focused his speech on
Artigas, the top brass turned out and the opposition was more receptive to the
idea behind 'Nunca más', even if Vázquez was the only president since the
restoration of democracy in 1985 to attend.End of preview - This article contains approximately 526 words.
