BRAZIL: Debating Lula's social achievements

The strength of the domestic economy is the government's trump card as it heads into the 2010 election campaign. President Lula da Silva's official candidate to succeed him, Dilma Rousseff, promises close continuity with his two successful administrations. While the government proudly touts the fact that Brazil is set to become the world's fifth largest economy by the time of the 2016 summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, there is still plenty of work pending for whoever wins October's election.
