COSTA RICA: US military presence sparks concern

President Laura Chinchilla has been forced on the defensive over the recent decision by congress to authorise the entry of 46 US warships and 7,000 marines into Costa Rican waters to assist with the fight against drugs - one of her declared priorities. Chinchilla's insistence that the move is in line with an earlier agreement allowing the US coastguard access to national territory, has failed to convince a public unused to military presence since Costa Rica abolished its army in 1949.
