DOMINICAN REPUBLIC | Fernández on tour. President Leonel Fernández met his US peer Barack Obama in Washington this week as part of a tour of the US and Europe. As well as pledging more collaboration against organised crime, Obama praised his “leadership" in helping with the Haiti relief effort after January's earthquake and the aftermath of the coup d'état in Honduras, whose ousted president, Manuel Zelaya, is in exile in the Dominican Republic. Fernández's trip to Europe was notable for a stopover in Germany, the first official visit by a Dominican Republic leader to that country. There he met Chancellor Angela Merkel and sought to trumpet the Dominican Republic's appeal as a destination for both tourism and investment. His efforts regarding the latter were backed by reports of real GDP growth of 7.5% year-on-year in the first quarter.
