MEXICO: Calderón drops Gómez Mont

President Felipe Calderón Hinojosa dismissed his interior minister, Fernando Gómez Mont, and moved his economy minister to become his chief of staff on 14 July. The departure of Gómez Mont has been inevitable since the purely tactical “Stop the PRI" alliances did so well in the 4 July gubernatorial elections. Gómez Mont opposed the tactical alliances, which were the brainchild of César Nava, the president of the ruling Partido Acción Nacional (PAN). The PAN's partners in these alliances are a motley crew of its ideological opponents from the Left whose only point of agreement with the PAN is their common detestation of the Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI).
