There is trouble brewing in Colonia Guahory, a rural community located in Paraguay’s central Caaguazú department. Since mid-September, there have been violent clashes in Guahory between landowners and landless peasant farmers that have occupied local lands demanding their expropriation and redistribution by the state. The conflict has prompted the authorities to heavily deploy the police to the area to try to restore order. But this has led to nationwide mobilisations by peasant farmer organisations in support of the Guahory squatters and the sector’s long-held demand for a comprehensive land reform. All of this has sparked concerns that if the situation is not resolved, there could be another major outbreak of violence as in the 2012 ‘Curuguaty massacre’, which served as a catalyst for the impeachment of former president, Fernando Lugo (2008-2012).
