CHILE: Gearing up for 2017

With less than a year to go until general elections in November 2017, potential candidates from both the ruling Nueva Mayoría leftist coalition and opposition Chile Vamos coalition are throwing their hats into the ring. Despite the fact that he has yet to declare his hand, and the recent hint of scandal involving his investments in a Peruvian fishing company [WR-16-46], former president Sebastián Piñera (2010-2014) continues to lead pre-electoral polls. With primaries to be held in July 2017 to elect the candidates for the various parties and coalitions, the pre-electoral manoeuvring is proving particularly damaging for the Nueva Mayoría.
