Ecuador’s largest umbrella indigenous organisation, Confederación de Nacionalidades Indígenas del Ecuador (Conaie), has denounced the decision by the government led by President Rafael Correa on 12 January to extend a state of exception, declared in the south-eastern province of Morona Santiago on 14 December after the death of a police officer, for a further 30 days. Conaie called the measure “a clear provocation”. The government declared the state of exception in response to an attack on the Panantza-San Carlos mining site in the area by Shuar indigenous protesters which led to the police fatality [RA-16-12].
