This month Hervé Ladsous, the United Nations (UN) Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, told reporters in Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince, that “the military component of MINUSTAH is likely to disappear in the relatively near future” and “We are looking at the modalities”. Ladsous made his remarks following a week-long visit where he attended the inauguration of President Jovenel Moïse who took office on 7 February after winning the November 2016 presidential election outright for former President Michel Martelly’s (2011-2016) Parti Haïtien Tèt Kale (PHTK) [SSR-16-12].
