Official statistics on homicides in Brazil are few and far between, having last been updated in 2015. But unofficial studies suggest violent crime is spiralling out of control. A survey released on 8 May by local pollster DataFolha found that 50m Brazilians (a third of the population) know a friend or family member who was murdered.
