El Salvador: A controversial proposal

Last month Guillermo Gallegos, the president of El Salvador’s national legislature, called for ‘self-defence groups’ to be legalised in order to combat local street gangs (maras) which are widely blamed for the country’s notorious public security problems. His proposal comes amid growing concerns on the part of the left-wing Frente Farabundo Martí para la Liberación Nacional (FMLN) government led by President Salvador Sánchez Cerén, that deportations of mara members from the US are set to rise under the government led by President Donald Trump.
