The Dominican Republic (DR)’s President Danilo Medina remains under pressure to dispel suspicions that Brazilian engineering firm Odebrecht benefitted from lucrative state contracts in exchange for bribes paid to officials in his government. The DR attorney general’s office (PGR) has already claimed to have uncovered irregularities in various contracts awarded to Odebrecht under previous governments from the ruling Partido de la Liberación Dominicana (PLD), and various incumbent and former government officials have been arrested as part of its ongoing investigations [RC-17-06]. But so far, the investigations have not implicated President Medina in any wrongdoing despite the insistence by local anti-corruption activists that irregularities have also taken place under Medina and he has a case to answer.
