PERU | Legal blow for Fujimori. “A message for the dark forces: I rule here." With these words César San Martín promised to guarantee judicial independence and impartiality after being elected decisively as the president of the supreme court. San Martín, who won 13 of 15 votes on the court against Judge Enrique Mendoza Ramírez, won fame by sentencing former president Alberto Fujimori (1991-2000) to 25 years in prison in April 2009. Fujimori became the first former, elected head of state in the region to be brought to trial and convicted in his own country for serious human rights violations. San Martín's election is a blow to Keiko Fujimori, whose presidential electoral campaign is underpinned by her determination to win a pardon for her father. The press claimed
Fujimorismo had tried to influence the election but failed. “Being attacked by
Fujimorismo is like being decorated for good conduct," an editorial in
La República argued.
