Haiti: On 24 July Fanm Ayisyen Nan Miyami (FANM), a Haitian women’s civil-society group based in Florida, US, staged protests at the FANM headquarters in Miami in an attempt to urge the US administration led by President Donald Trump to further extend the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) – a US immigration benefit which affects some 50,000 Haitians in the US. In May, the US Department of Homeland Security announced its decision to extend the TPS for Haitian nationals for just a further six months. The decision met with criticism from US-based activists and legislators who have been calling for it to be extended for a further 18 months. They argue that Haiti is still “reeling” from the devastating 2010 earthquake, which killed at least 200,000 people and cost an estimated 120% of Haiti’s GDP; and from hurricane ‘Matthew’, Haiti’s worst hurricane in 52 years which made landfall in October 2016 and killed some 1,000 people.
