Chile’s Goic stays in presidential race despite bust-up

Development: On 3 August Carolina Goic, the presidential candidate for Chile’s centrist Partido Demócrata Cristiano (PDC), confirmed that she will remain in the race ahead of November’s general elections despite a fierce disagreement with the party’s national executive committee.

Significance: Goic objected strenuously to the decision by the PDC national executive committee to endorse a list of congressional candidates that includes Ricardo Rincón on its senate slate. Rincón, an incumbent congressional deputy, was charged with domestic violence in 2002. Goic had threatened to withdraw her candidacy at the weekend (29-30 July), arguing that by endorsing Rincón’s candidacy the party had contravened its own selection criteria, fallen short of its ethical standards, and put her in an awkward position as a staunch critic of gender violence. Although Goic has opted against withdrawing her presidential bid, tension within the PDC continues.
