Bad record for environmental rights in Honduras and Nicaragua

The situation for land and environmental activists is deteriorating worldwide, according to ‘Defenders of the earth,’ a report published by UK-based NGO Global Witness in July. The picture is particularly bleak in Latin America, where 60% of the 200 murders of these individuals recorded in 2016 took place. Nicaragua claims the dubious title of the deadliest country per capita for land and environmental activists in 2016, while Honduras remains the most murderous country per capita of these individuals historically, with 127 murders recorded since 2007.
