Citizens’ Revolution: the legacy

In August 2017 Ecuador’s ‘citizens’ revolution’ was at a turning point. The moment might have been seen as one of great triumph and success for Alianza PAIS (AP), the left-wing movement which had come to office on a rising ‘pink tide’ a decade earlier, and which had run the country ever since. As the tide turned against other left wing governments in the region (notably in Argentina and Brazil) and the ‘Bolivarian revolution’ in Venezuela descended into chaos, Ecuador seemed to have been able to keep the faith, offering a mix of political stability, economic growth, and poverty alleviation. The country’s leadership also appeared to have ultimately decided to avoid the obsession with the cult of personality and repeated presidential re-election that has dogged many countries in Latin America. After three consecutive terms in office as President, Rafael Correa (2007-2017) had taken the wise decision to step down.
