Manuel Zelaya will return to Honduras in 2011. The ousted former president
made the promise in a long New Year letter sent to the principal national
dailies from his exile in the Dominican Republic. The letter comes almost one
year after he was flown to Santo Domingo and President Porfirio Lobo was
inaugurated. Lobo accused Zelaya of cowardice last month for not returning
despite offering him “guarantees" [WR-10-50]. Lobo snapped because the
recognition of his government depends on the resolution of the Zelaya issue.
That Honduras remains isolated was underscored by the fact that Lobo was the
only Latin American president not invited to the investiture of Dilma Rousseff
in Brazil on 1 January.
