Colombia: Ecopetrol, Colombia’s state-owned oil firm, has reported that its main Caño Limón-Coveñas oil pipeline has been sabotaged causing the company to temporarily cease using the pipeline and activate a contingency plan. Ecopetrol clarified in a press release that the Caño Limón-Coveñas pipeline was immediately shut down after a drop in the pipeline’s pressure was reported. However, the firm reported that by that stage oil had already leaked into nearby gorges, El Carmen and La Virgen, located in the northern department of Norte de Santander. So far in 2017, Ecopetrol has registered 43 attacks on the Caño Limón-Coveñas pipeline across four different departments. While the identity of the saboteurs remains unknown, such attacks have been repeatedly attributed to the Ejercito de Liberación Nacional (ELN) insurgent guerrilla group.
