The Chinese-funded projects were put on hold in December 2016, when a legal challenge saw the supreme court (CSJN) order the elaboration of an environmental impact assessment (EIA) report. But Andrés Nápoli, the director of Fundación Ambiente y Recursos Naturales (Farn), a local environmental NGO, has claimed that the fate of the projects is not yet sealed, as the CSJN may yet find the EIA report to be inadequate. Environmentalists say the dams will endanger the Argentino Lake and the Los Glaciares national park.
