NICARAGUA: Mining unrest as government seeks to boost sector

Local residents from Santa Rosa del Peñón municipality, in Nicaragua’s León department, have been staging protests against exploratory drilling in relation to the La India gold mining project, carried out by British-owned company Condor Gold which completed a pre-feasibility study (PFS) and two preliminary economic assessments (PEA) on the project in 2014. The unrest comes as the Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN) government led by President Daniel Ortega is seeking to promote the country’s mining sector, having announced the creation of a state mining company earlier this year [RC-17-07] and this month named its director.
