Government on defensive over Maldonado
No sooner did the Argentine government led by President Mauricio Macri get onto the front foot after a positive result in the 13 August open, mandatory and simultaneous primary elections (Paso) for the upcoming 22 October federal midterm legislative elections, than it was pushed firmly onto the back foot, fending off allegations about its human rights record. The disappearance of Santiago Maldonado, a young political activist and supporter of radical Mapuche indigenous campaigners in the south-eastern province of Chubut, is becoming a cause célèbre, threatening to damage the prospects of the ruling centre-right Cambiemos coalition in the midterm polls.
