Bachelet moves on another electoral pledge

At the end of last month Chile’s President Michelle Bachelet moved to fulfil another electoral campaign promise and she sent down a marriage equality bill to the national legislature which would extend the right to marriage to same-sex couples. Likely to be well received by the centre-left ruling Nueva Mayoría coalition’s socially progressive support base, the move comes as President Bachelet recently promulgated a new law decriminalising abortion in three circumstances following its approval last month by the legislature [RBS-17-08]. A recent survey by local pollster Cadem, published at the end of August, showed that some 38% of respondents believe this will be Bachelet’s main political legacy.
