Frente favela comes to the fore

Celso Athayde, a civil rights activist from Brazil’s proto political party Frente Favela Brasil (FFB), is not your average politician. Born to two alcoholics in Baixada the Fluminense area of Rio de Janeiro state, he spent the first ten years of his life on the streets. Instead of going to school, he was educated by Rogério Lengruber from the Falange Vermelha street gang, which later became the Comando Vermelho (CV) criminal organisation. From Lengruber, Athayde learned everything from the fundamentals of business to Marxist ideals to Russian literature. “Read this,” said Lengruber, passing Athayde a copy of War Peace he had received in jail “or I’ll beat you”.
