Celso Athayde, a civil rights activist from Brazil’s proto political party Frente Favela Brasil (FFB), is not your average politician. Born to two alcoholics in Baixada the Fluminense area of Rio de Janeiro state, he spent the first ten years of his life on the streets. Instead of going to school, he was educated by Rogério Lengruber from the Falange Vermelha street gang, which later became the Comando Vermelho (CV) criminal organisation.
