Setbacks for indigenous people across the sub-region

On 9 August, the United Nations (UN) celebrated the International Day of the World’s Indigenous People. This year is of particular importance, as it is the tenth anniversary of the adoption of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP). But a report published in April by the international NGO International Work Group for Indigenous Affairs (IWGIA) found that the conditions faced by different indigenous groups across the globe appear to have suffered a general regression in Brazil and South America’s Southern Cone, putting these governments under scrutiny.
