Venezuela: The national assembly (AN) has approved a report in which it blames the government led by President Nicolás Maduro for the shortage of petrol in the oil-rich country and the negative economic and social consequences it has produced. The move by the opposition-controlled AN comes after numerous complaints by Venezuelan motorists this week about the long queues they encountered in petrol stations around the capital, Caracas, due to a shortage of fuel. The AN report accuses the Maduro government of implementing policies that have undermined the capacity of the state-owned oil firm, Pdvsa, to produce refined petrol fuels and led Venezuela to rely instead on refined fuel imports to the tune of US$9bn a year. The report demands that the Maduro executive and Pdvsa “meet their legal obligation to guarantee the distribution of petrol fuels around the national territory”.
