In brief: Argentina

Argentina: The national statistics institute (Indec) has released new poverty data which shows that the national poverty rate fell 1.7 percentage points to 28.6% in the first half of the year compared to the same period of 2016. An Indec report attributed the fall in the poverty rate to the steady fall in the national inflation rate over the past 12 months, rising real salaries, and the creation of new jobs. The poverty rate has now reached its lowest level since the government led by President Mauricio assumed office in December 2015 and introduced a series of economic reforms designed to address Argentina’s high inflation and low economic growth rates. The Indec results suggest that these economic policies are starting to produce tangible results for the local population. However, the new poverty rate means that 11.35m people are still considered to be poor in Argentina.
