A Peruvian judge ordered on 13 August that the mayor of Tocache in the north-eastern region of San Martín be placed under preventive detention for 18 months to face charges of terrorism and suspected involvement in a drug network. David Bazán Arévalo was arrested in late July by Peru’s counter-narcotics police Dirandro and the anti-terrorist police (Dircote), with support from the Lima office of the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).
