Brazil: Violence across Rio in favela crackdown

In the latest phase of operations to pacify Rio’s most violent areas, soldiers and security officers entered Rocinha, once one of Brazil’s safest favelas, after violence broke out on 17 September. This came after Operation Onerat was launched on 5 August to crack down on violent gangs operating out of the city’s favelas, which in turn followed the deployment of more than 10,000 soldiers and police officers on the streets of Rio de Janeiro in July.
