US condemns Venezuela’s “latest anti-democratic action”

Haiti: On 16 October, the US State Department issued a statement welcoming the United Nations (UN) Mission for Justice Support in Haiti (MINUJUSTH), which began operations that day. The press statement congratulates Haiti for “its progress in achieving greater security and stability” and recognizes the “conclusion of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH)” on 15 October after 13 years in the country. The US State Department press release described the transition as “a turning point in Haiti: from stability efforts to a focus on justice and the rule of law”. Composed of “up to seven Formed Police Units – or 980 FPU personnel – and 295 Individual Police Officers”, the new mission is mandated to assist the Haitian government to “strengthen rule of law institutions; further support and develop the National Police; and engage in human rights monitoring, reporting, and analysis”. The new mission has been established for an initial period of six months, from 16 October 2017 to 15 April 2018.
