After five years in the political wilderness since boycotting the legislative elections in 2005, this was the first question from the opposition to cabinet ministers summoned by the national assembly on 8 February. The interior minister, Tareck El Aissami, was eventually very candid in response to the question, especially since the last time the government released official annual murder figures was the last time the opposition was sitting in the assembly - in 2005. Other cabinet ministers also gave as good as they got, none more so than communications minister, Andrés Izarra, who cited the Uruguayan writer Eduardo Galeano who recently wrote that “In Venezuela there is no freedom of expression, they shout with complete freedom of expression."
