* Economy Minister Ildefonso Guajardo has said that Mexico will not abandon the renegotiations of the terms of the North American Free Trade Agreement (Nafta) with the US and Canada. Guajardo’s remarks came amid reports in the Mexican, US, and Canadian press that the Nafta negotiations, the fifth round of which are currently being held in Mexico City, appeared to have reached a major impasse over US demands. According to these reports, the view by Mexican and Canadian negotiators is that the talks are ‘going nowhere’ and that US negotiators are adopting an intransigence stance in order to ensure the failure of the negotiation process. Asked about this, Guajardo said that progress was being made and that the Mexican government will continue to take part in the negotiations. “The one that abandons the [negotiating] table, is the one that doesn’t like the agreement, Mexico will not abandon the table”, Guajardo said.
