In brief: Uruguay

Uruguay: Washington Corallo, the president of Uruguay’s chamber of industry (CIU), has said that 16,000 jobs have been lost in the manufacturing sector in the last three years as a result of the relative fall in activity in the sector. Speaking at the CIU’s annual conference, Corallo noted that according to the latest data from the national statistics institute (INE) the level of activity in the industrial manufacturing sector (excluding the oil sector) fell by 2.6% year-on-year in the third quarter of the year. While this was the first time that there was a contraction in the level of activity in the manufacturing sector in four consecutive quarters, Corallo noted that the level of activity in the sector has not been much more dynamic than last year and that the sector is still far from returning to the historic peak levels of activity recorded in 2012-2013.
