Peru: The Sociedad Nacional de la Minería, Petróleo, Energía (SNMPE), an extractive sector private lobby group, has reported that national oil production increased by 15.9% year-on-year in October to 40,700 barrels per day (bpd). A SNMPE report notes that the increase in oil production in October was driven by an increase in production at the Lote 8 fields located in the Amazonian region of Loreto and operated by Argentine firm, Pluspetrol. The increase in national oil production came despite the fact that Peru’s main oil field - Lote 192, which is also located in Loreto region - remains inactive due to the ongoing protests by local indigenous groups against the government’s awarding of a new Lote 192 exploitation contract to Frontera Energy, a Canadian firm. The indigenous groups complain that the new Lote 192 contract was awarded without them being consulted first.
