The much-anticipated return to Ecuador of former president Rafael Correa (2007-2017) fell a bit flat. A group of loyalists within the ruling Alianza País (AP) had hoped it would galvanise the party’s grassroots and culminate in resounding support for President Lenín Moreno’s expulsion from the party at a convention on 3 December. But rallies organised in several of the country’s largest cities attracted a low turnout, and Correa even faced some heckling.
