Argentine judge seeks Fernández arrest for treason

Development: On 7 December, Judge Claudio Bonadio appealed to the federal senate to allow the arrest of former president Cristina Fernández (2007-2015), who was sworn in as a senator a week earlier.

Significance: Judge Bonadio’s move against Fernández will cause political tension. Fernández reacted by launching a fierce attack on her successor, President Mauricio Macri, whom she accused of politicising the judiciary. The cabinet chief, Marcos Peña, responded by saying that Macri did not come to power to interfere in the judiciary, adding pointedly that “we must all accustom ourselves to living in a context where we are all equal before the law and there is no impunity for anyone”.
