* Manuel Molano, the general director of the Mexican competitiveness institute (Imco), a local think-tank, called on the Mexican authorities to invest more in the development of the country’s human capital rather than its physical capital. Speaking at a symposium on economic and financial education organised in Mexico City, Molano said that emerging changes to the global economy will affect the labour market around the world such as the advent of artificial intelligence (AI) and other technological changes could lead to the disappearance of many traditional jobs. Molano added that this could negatively affect Mexico’s population unless more is invested in training and people are given the tools to adapt to the upcoming changes. Noting that 42.2% of Mexico’s economically active population are employed in jobs that are susceptible to being automated in the next 10 years, Molano said “we are running out of time to invest in our young [people]”.
