Venezuela: Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro has announced the awarding of new licenses to exploit two natural gas fields to Russia’s state-owned oil firm, Rosneft. Maduro said that his government has given Rosneft 30-year concessions to exploit the ‘Mejillones’ and ‘Pataos’ fields located off the shores of the the north-eastern state of Sucre. Maduro’s announcement came after Rosneft’s CEO, Igor Ivanovich Sechin, visited Venezuela over the weekend (16-17 December) and signed new cooperation agreements between Rosneft and Venezuela’s state-owned oil firm, Pdvsa. It also comes after in November the Russian and Venezuelan governments announced that they had reached a deal under which Russia agreed to restructure US$3bn of debts owed to it by Venezuela.
