Peru's congress moves to oust Kuczynski

Development: On 15 December, Peru’s unicameral national congress voted overwhelmingly in favour of holding a debate this week on whether to remove President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski from power for “permanent moral incapacity”.

Significance: President Kuczynski’s back is against the wall. The main opposition Fuerza Popular (FP, Fujimoristas) party, which has a majority in the 130-seat congress, has consistently obstructed governance since Kuczynski came to power in July last year, censuring a number of his cabinet ministers on dubious grounds. But it is not just a case of the FP conspiring to bring down Kuczynski this time around.
