Dominican political developments will be key for Haiti

All eyes are on popular young musician Michel “Sweet Micky" Martelly and venerable matriarch Mirlande Manigat as the second round of Haiti's elections on 20 March approaches. Both Martelly and Manigat are attempting to drum up enthusiasm, as much as support for the run-off, by touring the country. They are competing hard for the younger generation: Martelly, by virtue of his youth and rebelliousness; Manigat, by responding to creole chants of “I want my Mum" at rallies by arguing that any mother looks to provide quality food, health and education for her children, as well as discipline. While all the focus is on who will win a constitutional mandate as president of Haiti for the next five years, however, little attention has been given to who will win election in the neighbouring Dominican Republic just over a year from now. The result of this election could be almost as important for Haiti.
